What does a Big Brother or Big Sister do?
The
process is really very simple: just be yourself
and spend time one-on-one with a child. As a Community-based
"BIG," you will meet regularly with your Little Brother
or Sister at times that are convenient to the both
of you. If you choose to be involved in the School
or Site Based mentoring program, you will meet once
a week or every other week at the student's school
during their lunch hour or possibly before or after
school. As a volunteer, the focus is not on spending
money, but just spending time with a child.
Where do the children
live?
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Nashua serves
children living in the communities of Amherst, Brookline,
Derry, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, Londonderry, Nashua,
Merrimack, Milford, Mont Vernon, and Wilton.
Our volunteers can live and work anywhere!
| What
is the diffference between the Community Based
Mentoring Program and the School Based Mentoring
Program? What about meeting at an After School
program? |
| A
Big Brother Big Sister can see their Little Brother
or Little Sister at any time and just about anywhere. We
refer to this as our Community- Based mentoring
program. You have to be at least 18 years
old to volunteer and show proof that you have
car insurance and a driver's license. We will
also talk about your home during the application
process just to be sure it is safe for a child
to visit. |

A
Big Brother or Big Sister participating in the
School Based program only visits the child during
the school year and only on school grounds. This
program is currently offered in Nashua, Hudson,
Merrimack and Derry . We are piloting the School-Based
mentoring program to other areas in the next few
years. |
| We
also have another volunteer opportunity.
Big Brothers and Big Sisters may meet with an
elementary student during an After School program.
This is a collaborative effort with the Adult
Learning Center, Girl's Inc., Boys &
Girl's Club and Nashua School District.
We are targeting high school students as potential
Big Brothers Big Sisters. You need to be
16 years old to participate in this program. |

How
is a match made? How do BBBS staff decide which child
and volunteer will be best suited to each other?
The staff makes every effort to pair children with
volunteers based on similar interests and personalities. Our
application process allows us the opportunity to get
to know each person very well and that helps us know
if the child and volunteer will get along. We
utilize the input of the child, parent and volunteer
to make the best and most appropriate mentoring relationship
- the match. A Match Support Specialist will
provide you, the child and the parent the guidance
and the support you need to form a successful relationship
throughout the match.
