Bowl for Kids Sake,
March through May, 2008
Bowl for Kids' Sake is about having fun while helping kids. It is the
largest annual fundraising event for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater
Nashua. Funds raised go directly toward matching children with caring
Big Brother and Big Sister volunteers.
In
2007 NH BBBS receives grant to work with children of Prisoners
Big
Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Nashua will lead a three year, $285,000
statewide program to provide mentors to children with incarcerated
parents. This program is part of a federal initiative through the Department
of
Health and Human Services. It is estimated that over 2,000,000 children
nationally have parents who are incarcerated. There are an estimated
1,600
children in New Hampshire that would qualify for this mentoring program.
We are reaching out to this population in order to provide them with a positive role model and friend while they are facing the difficulty of having a parent in prison.Our hope is to provide these children with the guidance they need in order to keep them from making choices that could someday cause them to become incarcerated. Nationally over 70% of children who have a parent that is incarcerated will someday are incarcerated themselves. Statewide our goal is to match 90 children, ages 6-15, annually with a Big Brother or Big Sister.
