Big Brothers Big Sisters of America
Big Brothers Big Sisters is
the nation's oldest and largest youth mentoring organization. Since 1904,
caring adult volunteers have been helping millions of children reach their
full potential and fulfill their dreams. There are programs in all 50
states that match kids with volunteers who provide meaningful friendships
and share fun experiences.
History
of BBBSA
Ernest
Coulter, a court clerk from New York City, started New York Big Brothers,
which would later become Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. He became
increasingly appalled by the suffering and misery of the thousands of
children who came through the court. So in late 1904, Coulter appeared
before a group of civic and business leaders. He recruited influential
men to mentor delinquent boys who came before him. He described a boy
about to be jailed:
"There
is only one way to save that youngster, and that is to have some earnest,
true man volunteer to be his Big Brother, to look after him, help him
to do right, make the little chap feel that there is at least one human
being in this great city who takes a personal interest in him. Someone
who cares whether he lives or dies. I call for a volunteer!"
Before he had
finished encouraging his fellow community members to befriend this child
in a one-to-one relationship, Ernest Coulter motivated nearly 40 men to
volunteer their time to help troubled youth. Coulter was the first individual
to use the term Big Brother in connection with this preventative movement.
BBBS
in New Hampshire
Since 1966, dedicated volunteers have worked with
BBBS professionals in New Hampshire to help boys and girls rise to their
potential. In 2001, nearly 700 children participated in Big Brothers Big
Sisters programs statewide.
As locally based
programs, each agency is responsible for raising and implementing its
own budget with the support and help of its host communities. Each has
responsibility for a region of New Hampshire, and focuses on the children
of that area. This local service model delivers programs tailored to meet
specific needs of their host communities.
